Lobophyllia is a Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral known for its fleshy tissue, maze-like ridges, and bold coloration. It’s found throughout the Indo-Pacific and can grow into large, sculptural colonies in home aquariums.
Its name comes from the Greek “lobos” (lobe) and “phyllon” (leaf) — describing the layered, folded shape it forms. In the reef, these corals are slow growers but can live for decades, creating essential shelter for small reef life
Care Guide
-
Lighting: Moderate to low (PAR 50–150) – thrives under softer light
-
Flow: Low to moderate – too much current can damage its flesh
-
Feeding: Benefits from occasional target feeding of mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or reef roids
-
Placement: Mid to lower rockwork or sand bed with space around it
-
Temperament: Generally peaceful, but keep a few inches from neighbors to avoid sweeper tentacle contact
Tank Parameters for Lobophyllia
-
Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C) – Keep stable to avoid stress.
-
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG – Avoid sudden changes.
-
pH: 8.1–8.4 – Stability matters more than the exact number.
-
Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH – Supports healthy skeletal growth.
-
Calcium: 400–450 ppm – Needed for building the stony skeleton.
-
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm – Keeps calcium and alkalinity balanced.
-
Nitrates: 2–10 ppm – Low but detectable levels prevent coral starvation.
-
Phosphates: 0.02–0.05 ppm – Avoid high levels to reduce algae growth, but don’t strip to zero.
-
PAR (Lighting): 50–150 – Moderate to low light; avoid intense direct light.
-
Flow: Low to moderate – Gentle current to keep tissue safe and avoid damage.
