First Due Aquatic Rescue Informational Guide For SPS

Small Polyp Stony (SPS) corals are the foundation builders of natural reef structures, known for their dense calcium carbonate skeletons and vibrant coloration. These corals belong to the order Scleractinia and are characterized by their six-fold symmetry—meaning their tentacles typically appear in sets of six or multiples thereof.

SPS corals are ideal for experienced reef keepers who prioritize water quality, stability, and lighting precision. They require strong, turbulent water flow and high-intensity lighting to thrive. Because of their sensitivity, maintaining consistent levels of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium is critical for healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

It's important to note that not all SPS corals have the same care requirements. For example, Acropora and Seriatoporamay both fall under the SPS umbrella, but their tolerance to environmental changes can vary significantly. We recommend researching individual species to match the needs of your reef system.

Whether you're looking to build a high-energy SPS-dominated reef or add structural diversity to an established system, this collection offers a curated selection of premium SPS corals grown and maintained with expert care.

SPS SPECIES

Acropora (SPS Coral)

Acropora are widely considered the royalties of SPS corals. With an incredible variety of shapes and colors, they bring a complexity to reef tanks that few other corals match. They require strong lighting, powerful flow, and very stable water chemistry, which makes them one of the most challenging groups to keep successfully. For aquarists with established systems and patience, Acropora become true centerpieces and a rewarding symbol of advanced reef keeping. We at First Due Aquatic Rescue suggest waiting at least one year for any Acropora.

Cyphastrea (Encrusting Coral – LPS/SPS-like)

Cyphastrea are encrusting corals known for their striking colors and ability to thrive in lower light. The popular Meteor Shower variety, (which we have in stock at First Due Aquatic Rescue)—with its blue base and bright red polyps—is just one example of the range of colors available. Because they adapt well to shaded spots and tolerate a wide range of conditions, Cyphastrea are a practical way to add vivid contrast to areas of your reef that might otherwise go unused.

Hydnophora (SPS)

Hydnophora grows in horn-like branches and is known for both its beauty and its aggressive sting. It should always be given space from neighboring corals, as it can overtake less aggressive species. Despite its strong defenses, Hydnophora is hardy and quick-growing, and it readily accepts both light and meaty foods. For aquarists looking for a bold SPS that makes its presence known, Hydnophora is a dramatic choice.

Leptoseris (SPS)

Leptoseris has earned attention for its brilliant fluorescent morphs, especially the glowing orange and metallic varieties that light up under actinic blues. These corals encrust quickly and make excellent fillers for rockwork, while their shimmering colors draw the eye. Once rare and expensive, aquaculture has made Leptoseris more accessible, allowing more reef keepers to enjoy their unique look. A Leptoseris colony is a vibrant way to bring metallic glow and texture into your reef.

Montipora (SPS)

Montipora are one of the most diverse SPS groups, growing in plating, branching, or encrusting forms and displaying nearly every color imaginable. They thrive under bright lighting, strong flow, and stable water conditions, yet they are more forgiving than Acropora, making them a popular “first SPS” coral. With so many varieties to choose from, Montipora can adapt to almost any aquascape and add colorful structure to reefs of all sizes.

Pavona (SPS)

Pavona, often called Cactus Coral, is hardy and versatile, able to grow in encrusting, plating, or branching forms. It tolerates fluctuations in water quality better than many other SPS, making it suitable for mixed reefs. Pavona grows quickly and can sting nearby corals, so thoughtful placement is key. Bright morphs, especially the orange varieties, bring a vivid splash of color and texture, making Pavona an eye-catching yet durable addition.

Pocillopora (SPS)

Pocillopora is an approachable branching SPS coral that appeals to both new and experienced reef keepers. While not as demanding as Acropora, it retains the classic SPS appearance and grows into dense colonies. When stressed, Pocillopora polyps can sometimes detach and reattach elsewhere in the tank, creating new colonies. With the right care, this coral develops into a lush, tree-like feature that adds depth and life to any reef system.

Porites (SPS)

Porites are colorful small-polyp stony corals that are less commonly seen in the hobby but offer unique character. They usually grow as finger-like branches rising from a thick encrusting base and can display a range of hues. Though often overlooked, Porites are hardy and long-lived when given consistent conditions. For aquarists wanting something different from the usual SPS lineup, Porites provide a subtle yet rewarding addition.

Psammocora  (SPS)

Psammocora is a lesser-known SPS coral with a fine, velvety appearance that stands out under close inspection. They grow quickly, tolerate a wide range of tank conditions, and add unusual texture to reef aquascapes. While not as common as Montipora or Acropora, Psammocora’s unique look and resilience make it an excellent choice for reefers wanting something out of the ordinary.

Seriatopora (SPS)

Bird’s Nest corals (Seriatopora) are delicate-branched SPS that form dense, tangled clusters. They are known for their bright colors and rapid growth when placed in stable conditions. Unlike many SPS, Bird’s Nest can adapt to slightly lower lighting but may bleach under overly intense light. Although fragile in structure, broken branches often regrow, making this coral surprisingly hardy. With their fine, intricate branching, Bird’s Nest corals add movement and texture that few others match.

Stylocoeniella (Thorn Coral – SPS)

Stylocoeniella is an unusual encrusting SPS coral sometimes called Thorn Coral. Its polyps can resemble those of Montipora or even small-polyp Goniopora, depending on their extension. Tiny worm tubes often give the colony a spiky look, adding to its unique appearance. Rare in the trade, Stylocoeniella appeals to aquarists seeking something different to showcase in their reef.

Stylophora (Cat’s Paw Coral – SPS)

Stylophora, or Cat’s Paw, is a branching SPS coral less common in the trade but highly rewarding. It shares some features with Montipora and Pocillopora, but its evenly spaced polyps give it a look all its own. Stylophora thrives in high light and strong flow, developing into a bold, structured colony that becomes a highlight in SPS-dominant or mixed reef tanks. For reef keepers seeking variety beyond the most common SPS, Stylophora is a beautiful option.
