001 – Toadstool Leather Coral
Scientific Name: Sarcophyton spp.
Type: Soft Coral
Overview
This WYSIWYG Toadstool Leather Coral features a thick, mushroom-like cap with subtle ribbing and excellent polyp extension across its surface. Once established, the crown expands fully and flows with the current, bringing natural motion and texture to the reef. This particular frag shows a healthy base and firm tissue—ready for placement in a low-risk soft coral or mixed reef environment.
Toadstools are exceptionally hardy and among the best starter corals in the hobby. Their tolerance for varied light and flow makes them adaptable, forgiving, and dependable in long-term aquascapes.
Care Requirements
Lighting:
Moderate to high (PAR 100–250). Will adapt to a wide range but shows strongest color and expansion under quality blue/white full-spectrum reef lighting.
Water Flow:
Moderate to high. Needs indirect flow across the cap to keep it clean and promote polyp extension. Periodic shedding is normal and aided by steady current.
Placement:
Bottom to mid-level. Mount to a stable rock with room around the cap. Allow several inches of clearance to prevent shading and chemical interaction with other corals.
Feeding:
Photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae. Does not require feeding, but will benefit from occasional trace element dosing or amino acids in balanced reef systems.
Aggression Level:
Low. However, like most leather corals, toadstools release allelopathic compounds that may irritate sensitive LPS or SPS. Use activated carbon and water changes to mitigate.
Growth Rate:
Moderate to fast. Will double in size over time and can become a showpiece in soft coral displays.
Difficulty:
Easy. Highly recommended for beginner reefers or soft coral grow-outs. Toadstools are among the most reliable softies in the trade.
Additional Notes
This frag is well-attached and fully healed, showing healthy tissue and normal surface behavior. You may observe occasional waxy shedding—this is part of its natural growth cycle and not a health concern.
Perfect for beginners, large-tank fill-in, or mixed reef builders looking for motion, structure, and long-term color stability.
